Phil Guo and Dr. Fernando Flores

(April 5, 2010) Human Factor International (HFI) Director of Business Development Asia Pacific, Phil Guo, is currently engaged in Pluralistic Networks' 4-month on-line program, "Working Effectively in Teams." Just returned from a business trip to the United States, he is the first Chinese person to participate in the on-line workshop that began on February 8, 2010 and will complete on May 30, 2010. HFI's Managing Director Jeffrey Jones developed an interest in Dr. Fernando Flores' approach to ontological coaching while completing his Executive Coach Certification at Columbia University, and found significant value around the use of virtual realities in the Executive Coaching field. HFI is the first global coaching practice to establish a presence in Linden Labs' Second Life virtual reality platform.

Phil remarked about the program: "This is a brand new experience of communication and relationship building in a cross-cultural and cross-generational environment. My initial concern was comprehension of English but what I'm recognizing about group dynamics is that multiple people, regardless of language, may interpret the same thing differently. It's also revealing to observe how people's emotions come into play within the context of individual feedback and group assessment of one another's skills. I'm fortunate to have this learning opportunity with a diverse group from around the globe."

The Pluralistic Networks website explains: "If you are interested in beginning to embody new, more effective ways to engage and work with others, and wish to experience more individualized conversations and exercises, we offer a four-month online interactive program utilizing virtual environments and VOIP (voice over Internet protocol). These tools make possible a new kind of pedagogy that is freed from the bounds of time and space, and that creates a complex social network within which students can learn new abilities while in action with others. The focus of this program is to increase each participants' ability to invent their world with others, and become more effective in the way they lead and work with other people. As a result of participating in the program, you will not just learn new facts, but you will also learn, in action with others, to continuously invent yourself by engaging more effectively with other people. More specifically, you will learn to 1) build strong teams and become a more effective leader 2) become a more effective and collaborative team player 3) eliminate waste caused by miscommunications, lack of coordination, redundancies and missed opportunities 4)listen more effectively to the concerns of others 5) build trust with others, including people from different countries and cultures 6) build emotional fortitude and flexibility to navigate constant change 7) create stronger, long-lasting and more flexible networks."

Dr. Fernando Flores is an entrepreneur, pioneer of workflow software, owner of numerous patents on the action/language approach to software design, author of many books and articles, and cited in over 4000 publications, Dr. Flores is regarded as a world class expert on how people work together to get things done. His management breakthroughs led to the establishment of Logonet, an educational corporation; Action Technologies, a software corporation; Business Design Associates, Inc.; an international consulting company, and Pluralistic Networks. He obtained his PhD from UC Berkeley, and his dissertation, Communication and Management in the Office of the Future, became the foundation of much of his later work. His books include: Understanding Computers and Cognition, A New Foundation for Design, co-authored with Dr. Terry Winograd, which was named the Best Information Science book of 1987 by the American Society for Information Science, and recognized by Byte Magazine as one of the all time 20 most influential books on Information Technology; Disclosing New Worlds: Entrepreneurship, Democatic Action and the Cultivation of Solidarity, co-authored with Hubert Dreyfus and Charles Spinosa; and Building Trust, co-authored with Robert Solomon. Currently, Dr. Flores is finishing his term as a Senator in Chile, and plans to return to California in 2010, at which time he will focus all of his attention to developing learning tools and environments that will enable people to cultivate and thrive in Pluralistic Networks.
