distracted driving

We all think we’re the exception to the “no texting while driving” rule and law, but do you know how dangerous distracted driving really is?

Highway experts have determined that 80 percent of all traffic accidents are the result of distracted driving. So by just keeping your eyes on the road, instead of the thing distracting you, we could eliminate 80 percent of all car collisions across the nation and save thousands of lives each and every year.

Our brains measure distance through speed and time. Our reaction times depend on this to avoid everyday things like avoiding running into people, or putting your hands up when your friend throws you a ball. All of these human experiences happen within a relatively small distance and speed, which our brains have been wired to properly react.

When we introduce cars into the mixture, our brains are still operating under “human conditions.” You can walk the entire length of a football field, text, and avoid most dangers  by simply stopping or switching direction. When traveling 60 mph you are able to travel the distance of an entire football field within just a few seconds! So in that text that only reads, “Lol” you have already traveled about 100 yards. At these speeds, a lot can happen and won’t give you the time to react properly and avoid collision.

Cellphones aren’t the only things that distract you. Anything that takes away your attention from the road can cause fatal accidents. Things like tuning the radio, your children crying in the backseat, fixing your hair in the mirror, eating, and more.

Even if you prepare for all distractions, there is still only so much you can do to avoid 100 percent of all accidents. To protect yourself from the perils of driving, you will need to invest in a San Antonio, TX car insurance policy.
