One process used to judge the safety of genetically engineered foods is the substantial equivalence concept. This process shows the degree to which a genetically modified plant or animal differs from its conventional counterpart and also helps to identify any increased health hazards that may be found in the new food. Various tests are used to identify the degree of substantial equivalence, including the testing of chemical composition, levels of toxins, nutritional quality, and more. If notable differences are found between the genetically modified food and its counterpart, then the food must be examined further to ensure its safety for human consumption.

All genetically modified foods currently on the market have been approved by these safety tests. However, as biotechnological practices in foods become more complex, judging the safety of foods becomes increasingly difficult. Progress must be made in identifying proteins found in genetically modified foods that may be potential allergens.

Dr. Michael Wald, author of his new book, Frankenfoods - Controversy, Lies & Your Health (available at Amazon.com), offers a riveting perspective of the GMO predicament exploring governmental and industry cover-ups, health dangers, environmental threats, GMO-free food plans and recipes, nutritional supplements and other practical solutions.  Dr. Wald declares, "The GMO dilemma is here to stay and anyone interested in protecting their health and that of their loved ones, friends and the planet, must educate themselves and take political and personal action right now!"  Considering the importance of this information Dr. Wald asks that you re-tweet his GMO links and follow him on Twitter -  @DrMichaelWald.
