"You've gotta be disciplined in this game" - Michael Vick Philadelphia Eagles QB

Out of sync, disinterested, pathetic, terrible… choose your term. They're all words being used to describe the Eagles' Tuesday night performance against the Vikings.

"It goes back to being disciplined," Vick said.

"All night, just careless, not disciplined, a lot of different things," said wide receiver Jason Avant.

Apparently some of the Eagles feel like they're suffering from a lack of discipline. That's the word they keep using when describing the beating they took from the Vikings on Tuesday night. They feel a need to "regroup".

What exactly does that mean for any top notch athlete? It usually translates into a loss. Lack of discipline will almost always generate a poor or subpar, lackluster performance.

What they're talking about is "self-discipline". They experienced a sudden and obvious onset of a lack of self discipline. The reasons can be numerous but the outcome is always the same. Lack of self discipline equals poor performance resulting in a loss.

What are the keys to self-discipline?

• Self-Control – Controlling emotions, actions, thoughts, words, and personal choices.

• Motivation – Passion that keeps us going and makes success worth achieving.

• Persistence – Ability and desire keep going even if the times get tough.

• Goals – Actions that create motivation that you believe will result in success.

How do we get the keys? By using any established proven method for training the brain for a positive outcome.

• Imagery – Seeing in the mind's eye what we want in the end.

• Hypnosis – Entering into a relaxed state of mind and body allowing all focus to be on the goal.

• NLP – Neuro Linguistic Psychology to rewire or retrain the brain.

• Meditation – Emptying the mind of all thought except for focus on achieving the goal.

So Eagles, let's remember everything you've learned during your careers as highly trained, highly paid, professional athletes. We know that your bodies are physically fit, trained and ready to go. But don't just assume that a win will come your way. Don't rely on the physical toughness being enough. Keep your mental game in fit working condition as well if you expect to win the big prize in the end. Get your mind back on track.

The same rules apply across the board to any athlete of any age in any sport.
Get your mind on the game. I created the Stofka Method of Sports Performance to help athletes maintain your self-discipline. Always. And if you can't do it on your own, go get the help you need to learn how to achieve the goal of winning. Train your body, train your brain, win the game.
