Is attitude everything?

Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet, Walter Scott, once said, “For success, attitude is equally as important as ability.” For others, attitude is everything. What they lack in ability and privilege, they make up with the right attitude.

In life, it is impossible not to encounter hardship. There is no shortcut out of it. Some are hit worse than the others, but everyone always has a choice—move forward or take a step back. This is where attitude comes in.

Attitude is defined as “a relatively enduring organization of beliefs, feelings, and behavioral tendencies towards socially significant objects, groups, events or symbols” (Hogg & Vaughan 2005, p. 150). Every time we deal with something, our attitude dictates our course of action. Attitudes are not universal. They vary from person to person. They can be shaped by one’s upbringing and experiences. While that is the case, attitudes can also be learned. And there are attitudes that are far more beneficial and valuable than others. For some, attitude is everything.

There’s no better way to show the essence of attitude than in our struggles through life. When faced with great peril, it is our attitude that defines who we are. Some people will let their fear overcome their conscience. But others stand firm and true to their values. There are people who will embrace the dark because they suffered in the hands of others. But there are also those who find it in their hearts to forgive and move forward. The latter takes more courage.

Life may throw us lemons, but what we do with them is entirely our choice. Many are born poor. Others might blame destiny or circumstances. Some will not let it keep them down. Either they rise out of it or endure it. But the most admirable ones are those who do not let being poor corrupt their souls. They will not let it be an excuse to steal, kill, or pillage. The same goes for the rich and powerful. Others might find ways to own more, earn more. Their greed knows no bounds. But some will gladly give up their gilded thrones to lead simple lives and contribute to the welfare of the common man.

Attitude is everything in life because it dictates how we deal with things, people, and events. We can be petulant, ignorant, or selfish. But at the same time, we can always choose to be good-natured, more aware, and selfless. We can give in to our anger, but we can always choose to be the better man by understanding that others have shortcomings.

But it is not only in life where attitude is everything. It is also applicable when it comes to success. Without the right attitude, we can toil night and day and still come away with nothing. But having the right attitude can steer us into the direction of our dreams. Yes, money, intelligence, and influence can go a long way. But without fortitude, patience, determination, perseverance, and confidence, they are all in vain. We must have the right mind-set to take on challenges, to make the right judgments, and to know when to stop. This can only be achieved when we cultivate and nurture positive attitudes.

Remember, in life and in success, attitude is everything, so pick a good one, or more.
