I had about a hundred yards of my property surveyed through thick woods with the intent of putting up a fence to delineate it so that neighbors’ landscapers and gardeners would know where to stop when they were clearing brush or cutting trees. I asked five companies to give me estimates:
One guy told me that it was too difficult, not what they’d want to do. He worked for a relatively large firm and I’m not sure the owner would have been delighted with his shrugging off the business. (He didn’t even choose to walk the boundary and measure it.)
One guy never got back to me after promising a proposal.
Three guys gave me estimates as promised but then never bothered to call me or follow up after that. Of the three, two were about the same in price and the other was 50% less.
Right now I’m just leaving it wild because I don’t trust the quality or timing of the promised work. Small businesses do have problems with regulations, and competition, and the economy, but their biggest problem is in not knowing how to run a business.
