Celebrating the "Great Gift" of Kindness

Local Author's New Book Shares Inspiring Thoughts from Bicycle Trips Across North America

October 4 2013 -- In 1970, former UBC student Brock Tully decided to pack his belongings, leave his home in West Vancouver, and set out on a 10,000 mile bicycle trip across North America. He wasn't just searching for the thrill of adventure– he was looking to find his way out of a haze of disillusionment and journey back to his heart. Cycling through Canada, the US and Mexico, witnessing firsthand the protests, riots and counterculture of the early 70s, Brock returned a changed man with a new mission – to help create a kinder, more connected world. The immeasurable value of a simple act of kindness has remained at the centre of Brock's message ever since.

Since that first trip, Brock has set off on two more internationally publicized cycling tours, "Cycling for Kindness" in 2000 and the "Kindness...Cycle it Forward" tour in 2009. After 50,000 kilometers travelled, Brock continues raising awareness about the importance of kindness: speaking at schools, business conferences, university campuses, and other group settings, about topics ranging from bullying prevention, to respecting the environment, to the value of building community.

In his latest book, The Great Gift for Someone Special – Inspiring thoughts from the heart and a short story for the heart (Influence Publishing) Brock speaks directly from the heart. Featuring hand--drawn illustrations, the book is a compilation of quotes from Brock about kindness, courage, authenticity, and communication. It also includes a heart warming short story about the themes of empathy and connectedness that echo through all of his books and speaking presentations.

Brock is celebrating the launch of his new book with a concert to raise awareness for a kinder world: the Kindness Sings Concert taking place Monday October 28 at the Unity Theatre (5840 Oak Street, Vancouver). The concert will include performance by numerous well--known local musicians. This event is open to the media and public. For group tickets please email: speaker@brocktully.com. For 5 or fewer tickets please visit: http://brocktully.brownpapertickets.com
