National keynote speaker and comedian Jan McInnis will take the stage next week at the Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association (PALA) Fall Conference with her resilience-focused program, "Bouncing Back: Handling Setbacks Like a Comedian."
In this high-energy keynote, McInnis blends humor, storytelling, and practical tools to help professionals recover quickly from mistakes and challenges. Drawing from more than 25 years in stand-up comedy, she shares seven powerful tips comedians use when they've had a comedy show that didn't go well —or when something goes wrong in front of a live audience.
"Comedians don't get the luxury of walking off stage when they make a mistake," McInnis explains. "They have to recover in the moment, keep the audience engaged, and move forward. They also have to get over a bad show quickly in order to move on and stay in the business. These techniques can help anyone bounce back from life's curveballs—whether at work or at home."
Her strategies include everything from knowing when it's okay to cover up a mistake—if you follow one golden rule—to reshaping your mindset through what she calls "a little brain surgery." McInnis also introduces her "AAA of Bouncing Back," a practical framework for reframing setbacks into stepping stones.
The keynote promises both laughter and learning, giving attendees not just comic relief but also tangible takeaways for building resilience. "You'll be amazed by how quickly comedians can rebound from a misstep," McInnis notes. "That skill doesn't come from a degree—it comes from trial, error, and the courage to keep moving forward."
This marks McInnis's second appearance at the PALA Fall Conference. Previously, she delivered her popular program "Finding the Funny in Change," which also highlighted how humor can be a vital tool for navigating challenges.
With her mix of clean comedy and motivational insights, McInnis has spoken to thousands of organizations nationwide, from healthcare to finance to government. Her unique ability to connect through humor makes her a sought-after voice on resilience, change, and communication.
Attendees at PALA can expect to laugh, learn, and leave better equipped to handle life's inevitable stumbles—comedian-style.
