Australian Marine Preserve Teeming with Life

In the history books 2016 will go down as the year of improbable events and the state of the oceans is no exception, with disheartening and inspiring developments taking place around the world. Technology continues to race forward at an astounding pace and is increasingly applied to ocean research and preservation. Two of the major goals of the Global High Seas Marine Preserve, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the oceans, saw positive movement as consumer awareness of demanding seafood products from sustainable sources grew and massive marine preserves were established by New Zealand the United States. Viewing the situation as dire but full of optimism, Danny Quintana, founder of GHSMP, is seeking to establish THE Global High Seas Marine Preserve to halt industrial and commercial fishing in international waters to help preserve major ocean fisheries, top-of-the-food-chain marine predators and ocean ecosystems.

The GHSMP website, over 140 pages, showcases the efforts of research institutions, private foundations, government entities and brave individuals in the struggle to preserve the oceans. Below is part of a movie by Tim Winton, Australian author and Patron of the Australian Marine Conservation Society, the latter being showcased on GHSMP website.

"We live on the veranda of the world's greatest island. It's our birthright to have a clean ocean, to interact with nature. And, like any birthright, we have to safeguard it," says Tim Winton. In the Sea and Me you will journey across Australia's world class marine parks to learn about how they support species like the highly priced and valued coral trout and lobsters, the graceful manta rays, and the placid grey nurse shark.

But, marine parks support more than life just in the sea. Many Australians living by the sea depend on marine parks for their livelihood as well as their health and wellbeing, and many are taking a stewardship role to care for these areas. Listen to the first-hand accounts of scientists, researchers, divers, tourist operators and fishermen who have a story to share about 'the veranda of one of the world's greatest islands.'

This film is a part of an Australia-wide filming project documenting the science and the experiences of locals, who live beside marine parks. Also watch 'My Saltwater Sanctuary,' which explores peoples' connection to marine parks in the state of New South Wales. If anyone wants to do their own screening with our marine reserve films, The Sea & Me and My Saltwater Sanctuary (53 mins total), to create a conservation about marine parks in your community's backyard, contact marine@nature.org.au or info@saveourmarinlife.org.au. It's a great opportunity for you to get a local speaker, and have a public discussion. These films have travelled all around Australia, and have had a wonderful impact.

In 2016 Danny Quintana, founder of the Global High Seas Marine Preserve and author of Space & Ocean Exploration: The Alternative to the Military Industrial Complex, started ramping up campaigns to help further the cause of preserving the oceans, major marine predators like tuna, sharks and whales, and major fisheries that feed billions of people around the world. To supplement the primary goal of the GHSMP, banning in industrial and commercial fishing in international waters by establishing the Global High Seas Marine Preserve, he has kicked off the 50 Sustainable Seafood Cities Campaign to increase consumer awareness and encourage municipal authorities from the 50 largest U.S. cities to mandate that only seafood products from sustainable sources be sold in their jurisdictions.

All these questions will be answered soon, and all the experts and all the kings men can't predict what will happen as evidenced by their poor record of predictions in an "improbable year when the impossible happened."
