Over 40? Fallen into a style rut? Looking frumpy, but can't figure out what you are doing wrong? Maybe all you need to do is to update your accessories. Here are 4 ways to Tweak Your Chic with the Right Accessories.

1. Necklaces

We all have some version of a plain gold necklace in our jewelry boxes left over from the 80's. These necklaces are usually sentimental and often are real gold, so we feel guilty if we don't wear them. But often a necklace like this looks too fine, elegant and basically lost on your neck during the daytime. A hipper look is larger, bolder, good quality costume jewelry. A chunkier faux stone necklace for example will add personality and color to the simplest of outfits and make you look much more modern.

2. Belts

Often when you buy a dress, it comes with matching belt. You may naturally assume you should be wearing it, when in fact you should only think of it as a suggestion. Don't feel locked into a tiny, boring, or ugly looking belt. This season wide belts are in style so changing your belt can really kick your dress up a few notches.

3. Handbags

If you still think that matching your purse with your dress and shoes is the way to go then you need an update. This is a very old rule. It's always nicer to have a pop of another color to complement your outfit, rather than have a matchy matchy look. So, if you are wearing a brown dress, try a moss green handbag or rust colored one, instead of brown. Also make sure your purse is not too dainty- a sure sign you are behind the times. Keep in mind that today's handbags are on the medium to large side and are come in popular materials like patent leather and suede with touches of interesting hardware.

4. Shoes

You may have boomer bunions, but don't fall into the trap of ignoring style just because you crave comfort. Too sensible and too generic and you'll look like you are ready for the nursing home. There is a balance. Look for shoes that provide both, such as those by Tayrn Rose. Heels always make you look sexy. Texture is important too, to give your outfit more personality. They say the legs are the last to go, so flaunt those great legs if you still have them by choosing shoes that sizzle.
