BELLEVUE, WASH., JUNE 5, 2012—Long Term Care Associates, Inc. ("LTCA") is proud to declare the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) as the charitable organization to whom it would direct its $10,000 prize as part of the Social Madness Challenge, sponsored by Capital One Spark Business. The Alzheimer's Association, based in Chicago, Illinois, is the world's leading leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research.

"Increased lifespans have come at a cost," said LTCA senior vice-president Stephen D. Forman. "Growing older is still the number one risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. If we can win this national competition, LTCA will donate the $10,000 prize towards finding a cure for this devastating illness."

More than 4,000 companies in 43 cities have entered the Challenge, which showcases the best social-media growth strategies in a tournament-style challenge. Local winners and runners-up in 3 size categories will be announced July 17. The national competition will take place July 24 through September 19, at which point 3 national victors will be able to donate $10,000 to the charity of their choice, courtesy of The Business Journals and Capital One Spark Business.

Forman continued, "LTCA is widely regarded for educating consumers about their long-term care planning options. Throughout the contest period, we plan to emphasize Alzheimer's and its correlation to LTC."  He cited the following:
  • Alzheimer's is the top cause of both Nursing Facility and Home Care Claims for those 75+.
  • 1 in 8 older Americans has Alzheimer's disease, including nearly 1 in 2 older than age 85.
  • Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.
  • Over 15M Americans provide unpaid care for a person with Alzheimer's (or other dementia).
  • Payments for Alzheimer's care in 2012 are estimated at $200,000,000,000.
