William O’Shaughnessy Dies at 84

One of the radio industry’s most popular, respected and influential independent radio station owner/operators, William O’ Shaughnessy has died (5/28) at the age of 84 after a battle with urothelial cancer.  He passed away at his home in Litchfield, CT after being treated at Columbia Presbyterian and Smilow Cancer Center in CT.  For years right up until the time of his death, O’ Shaughnessy served as president/CEO and editorial director of Whitney Radio, the parent company of Westchester community stations WVOX and WVIP which broadcast in the northern sector of the New York City metropolitan area.  O’ Shaughnessy was a former president of the New York State Broadcasters Association and chairman of public affairs for the National Association of Broadcasters.   He was a prolific author of numerous books about radio and the colorful people he has met and worked with over the years including AirWAVES” (1999), It All Comes Back to Me Now (2001) and More Riffs, Rants and Raves (2004).  He was working on a book titled Townies at the time of his death.  He was the recipient of numerous awards for his service to the broadcasting industry and his local community. TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison issued the following statement, “Bill O’ Shaughnessy was more than an accomplished broadcaster and author. He was a living symbol of the radio medium’s most glorious ideals – both in substance and style – and he was one of modern-day America’s most influential and inspirational proponents of the First Amendment.”  Services will take place at Lloyd Maxcy, 16 Shea Place in New Rochelle, NY on Tuesday, May 31st 4:00 pm-7:00 pm.  The funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua, 49 South Street, Litchfield, CT on Wednesday, June 1st at 11:30 am.  In lieu of flowers, the O’Shaughnessy family would be grateful for a donation in his honor to the Broadcasters Foundation of America: https://broadcastersfoundation.org/donate/
