“Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong.”—HL Mencken
“No one is as corrupt as the morally certain.” —Anonymous
I enjoy differing opinions, and I try to learn from opposing views. But I find it’s easer to do that at some times and with some people than others. And the difference for me is the arrogance often displayed by many of those who assume their position is perfect, unassailable, and that anyone who disagrees is, by definition, an inferior. That kind of arrogance and contempt undermines any attempt at credibility, as far as I’m concerned.
There is a dismissiveness from those who believe they occupy ethically superior ground that is repellant. But they don’t understand that, because they only listen to each other.
