Who the Hell Are You Calling An INTJ?

I’m weary of reading ignorant posts on Facebook which begin with:

Trump supporters are….

Progressives are….

Millennials are….

Women are….

These are the results of our tendencies to label whomever doesn’t agree with us (or whom we don’t understand), drop them in a metaphoric “drawer,” and condescend. These statements ignore that millennials are different amongst their own demographic, that many are similar to “boomers” in many beliefs, that calling Trump supporters “deplorable” probably lost the election for Clinton, and that women are independent and highly diverse people who need to be understood as such, not as a voting bloc.

These unintelligent points of view carry over to business, and they represent the worst of the so-called “personality profiles” and “behavioral assessments” that are peddled to clients every day. “What do you expect from an INTJ?” “Well, she’s a high ‘D’.” “The trouble is they are all “greens.” He is a reverted, progressive, antipodal, obsessive.

We assign labels to people so that we don’t have to take the trouble to try to understand them. That’s ruinous in business and polarizing in society.

But then again, over 85% of the American people report on surveys that they’re “above average.”
