Growing up as a little Black girl on the vibrant south side of Chicago, I never imagined that my voice would one day carry across continents, resonating with audiences around the world. But from those humble beginnings emerged a dream – a dream to become a speaker, to share my stories, and like many of us in the National Speakers Association (NSA)– to inspire others to find their  voices.

My journey began with a whisper, a quiet desire buried beneath the noise of self-doubt in my own head. I was a shy child, unsure of my place in the world and the power of my own voice. I was loved by two amazing parents—a father who stood tall and lean and was the color of Ritz crackers and a mother whose complexion matched barbecue grill charcoal with a fiery spirit to match. Despite their support, my confidence waned. So, I immersed myself in the written word, devouring books and soaking in the stories of others, not yet aware of the strength that lay dormant within me.

As I grew older, my passion for words only deepened but now I was poised to parlay them into storytelling. I remember the day it started. At 12 years old, I was tapped to give a speech in front of my entire school as part of a special ceremony. My knees knocked together as I walked to the podium that moved further away with each step I took. I could barely see a standing coffin, the protruding microphone on its surface my guillotine. I was serene with accepting my fate as a premature demise seemed much easier than giving a speech. When I finally took my place behind the podium,   a funny thing happened. I opened my mouth, and something took over me. My voice poured out. All those authors’ stories that I had inhaled suddenly reappeared, ready to retell their narratives, this time using my voice to spill their anecdotes and recite character quotes. My nervousness dissipated; control took over. I went into a zone. A titillating and transformative space. It was exhilarating! I was hooked.

Fast forward three decades, and I now stand as President and Chief Love Officer of ShanitaSpeaks LLC, a global media enterprise company dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and sharing stories that inspire, educate, and empower. Through ShanitaSpeaks, I’ve had the privilege of elevating the voices of marginalized communities, shining a light on issues that matter, by fostering dialogue and understanding across cultural divides.

But amidst the whirlwind of success and accolades, I’ve never lost sight of my roots – or my ‘Why.’ I remember the little girl from the south side who dared to dream big, who found solace in words and strength in listening. When I stand before audiences around the world, I carry her with me, a constant reminder of the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of one’s own voice.

Today, as an NSA member, I’m enthusiastic about encouraging my fellow speakers to reconnect with their own ‘Why’ – the driving force behind their passion for speaking. Whether it’s a desire to educate, inspire, entertain, or effect change, our ‘Why’is our north star, guiding us through the challenges and triumphs of our own journey.

Here Are Three ‘Why’ Guides:

  1. Embrace Your Roots: Remember where you come from and the journey that has shaped your voice. Your unique experience and perspectives are your greatest assets as a speaker.
  2. Listen Before Speaking: True communication begins with listening. Take the time to understand your audience and their needs and let them tell their stories to guide your message.
  3. Stay True to Your Why. Keep your passion and purpose at the forefront of everything you do. Let your why be your guiding light, from the stage and beyond.
