Capital Fringe: ‘Marx in Soho’
On the bicentennial of Karl Marx’s birthday, with “Das Kapital." 150 years old, Howard Zinn’s “Marx in Soho." — presented by Iron Age Theatre at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 555 Water St. SW, as part of the Capital Fringe Festival — offers a humane alternative to capitalism. Capital Fringe: ‘1 2 3’
As part of the Capital Fringe Festival, Theatre Prometheus presents a play about abandonment and ballroom dancing at Christ United Methodist Church, 900 4th St. SW. In this tragicomedy, inspired by true events involving the Ohio 7, three sisters are broken apart and brought back together by the crimes of their radical parents. Made in Hong Kong Film Festival
The Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, 1050 Independence Ave. SW, host the 23rd annual Made in Hong Kong Film Festival, a nine-film series of free Friday night and Sunday afternoon screenings. The opening film, on Friday, July 13, at 7 p.m. is “Shock Wave,." a thriller directed by Herman Yau. The festival continues through Aug. 12. Bastille Day a Day Early
A day-early celebration of Bastille Day will take place on Friday, July 13, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Embassy of France, 4101 Reservoir Road. Showcasing food and wine from France’s Alsace region on the Rhine, the event also includes a silent auction, live music by the Hot Club of Baltimore and dancing. General admission is $115. Bach Festival at Grace Church
Also on Friday, July 13, at 8 p.m., German organist Roland Maria Stangier will perform works by J. S. Bach and his contemporaries as part of the 25th Bach Festival at Grace Episcopal Church, 1041 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Tickets are $25 ($10 for students). Potomac River Cleanup: Theodore Roosevelt Island
On Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, Potomac Conservancy and the Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island invite area residents to get their hands dirty for clean water. The morning of volunteering will take place at Theodore Roosevelt Island, accessible from the Virginia side of Key Bridge or by car via the northbound lanes of the George Washington Parkway. Argentina Heritage Polo
The first Argentina Heritage Polo Tournament will take place on Saturday, July 14, at 3 p.m. at the Summerhill Polo Fields, 19999 Jerusalem Road in Poolesville, Maryland. Sponsored in part by the Embassy of Argentina, the event — which includes live Argentine music and asado (grilled meats) — is a benefit for the Garrahan Hospital, a Latin American pediatric hospital which has treated over 18 million children free of charge since 1987.
