Opening Reception at Art Museum of the Americas

On Thursday, Jan. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., there will be a free opening reception at the Art Museum of the Americas, 201 18th St. NW, for the exhibition “Dialog: Landscape and Abstraction.” The show pairs 20th-century abstract works in the museum’s permanent collection with immersive landscape paintings by Freya Grand, derived from her experiences in remote regions of Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and the Galapagos. Photography Talk at the Phillips

Masters of Hawaiian Music

Direct from the Pacific, the Masters of Hawaiian Music — guitarists and singers George Kahumoku Jr., Led Kaapana and Kawika Kahiapo — will perform on Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. in the Barns at Wolf Trap, 1635 Trap Road in Vienna, Virginia. Family Day of Native Games

The National Museum of the American Indian, 4th and Independence SW, will host “Winter Blast,” a free, family-friendly event celebrating indigenous games from the Arctic to Argentina on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Talibah Begay (Navajo) will share a traditional shoe-guessing game, Leihua Stewart (Native Hawaiian) will teach traditional Hawaiian games and Julia Garcia (Aymara) will engage visitors in Bolivian games. Chinese New Year Family Day

Also on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m., as part of the Kennedy Center’s multiday celebration of the Year of the Rat, there will be an afternoon of free activities for children of all ages, including demonstrations of calligraphy, sugar painting and wood block printing, a costume photo booth, a magician from Shenzhen and performances of traditional music. Opening Reception at AU Museum

Story District’s Top Shelf

Midori and Thibaudet at Strathmore

darlingdance at Dance Place

D.C.-based company darlingdance will perform at Dance Place, 3225 8th St. NE, on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. Founded in 2010 by choreographer and performance artist Hayley Cutler, darlingdance creates feminist postmodern dance theater works through the lenses of humor, community and realism. The Art of Sous Vide
