This month’s focus on being assertive has brought some great questions about the line between assertiveness and aggressiveness, and requests for tips.

As a reminder, assertiveness involves honoring yourself while respecting others. You see yourself as the same as others, not less than or more than.

Here are some examples that might help:

  • See yourself as important as others around you
  • Ask for what you want, don’t assume others know what you want.
  • Allow yourself to receive what you’ve asked for
  • Listen to others with the aim of respecting them
  • Avoid sacrificing yourself for the sake of keeping peace
  • Be clear in your intentions, while being respectful
  • Recognize that you can’t make everyone happy, and that they need to be responsible for their feelings, not you
  • Set boundaries for yourself, and communicate them to others, when appropriate
  • Trust your intuition – yep – THAT’s a biggy!
