There’s been a recent trend in naming winter storms, just like hurricanes. Yet calling this event Stella doesn’t make it any easier to clear your sidewalk or dig out your driveway. It doesn’t make the roads any safer to navigate after a snowfall like this.

What’s surprising about a storm like this is how many people seem to be caught by surprise. Snowstorms do happen in the Northeast in winter, just like tornadoes and hurricanes occur in the Midwest and South, and heavy rainstorms happen in California.

We can’t forecast exactly when an event like this will happen, but we can predict the severe weather events that are likely to occur in any given area, and we can prepare accordingly.
