The reports from the Houston, Texas area have been horrifying.
A record amount of rainfall from a hurricane has devastated southeastern Texas, causing an incredible amount of damage, displacing thousands and thousands of people, and resulting in at least 20 deaths. And the rain has not yet stopped.
Having lost my own home due to a hurricane and flood as a child, I know that when the flood waters recede, the recovery process will be long and arduous. This situation is unprecedented in scope because of the sheer number of people impacted.
Yet, amidst this we see glimmers of hope--neighbors helping neighbors, people from other regions driving towards the destruction with boats to help with rescue efforts, a furniture store owner who opened his store to evacuees to sleep, people across the country sending donations of food, clothing, and medical supplies, as well as money.
In the midst of a natural disaster, there are no rich people or poor people, no Republicans or Democrats. Just people who need help and people who want to do the right thing to help them.
