Top 5 European travel destinations

Europe is a trove of luscious landscapes just waiting to be explored. Despite being the world’s second smallest continent, it packs in more than its fair share of stunning scenery. Here are five must-visit destinations…

1. Hill Walking in Slovenia

Hill Walking in Slovenia

Slovenia’s verdant hills provide the perfect backdrop to an active holiday in Europe. Grab your hiking boots and head to the Julian Alps, home to breathtaking views across its many peaks. Kranjska Gora resort is a good base camp, situated near photogenic glaciers and with plenty of amenities to keep you replenished when you’re not out walking. In terms of getaways, in Europe or elsewhere, you can’t go far wrong with a few weeks spent traversing the various lakes and valleys littered across Slovenia.

2. Horse Riding in Iceland

Horseriding in Iceland

There’s something primitive about traveling across volcanic landscapes on horseback. Iceland’s rugged mountainscapes and flats are wholly picturesque, and they’re also suitable for horse rides! Use Reykjavik, the capital, as your starting point, then head out across the outskirts and onto color-rich fields before culminating at spectacular mountain viewpoints. Tours cater for all riding levels and abilities, so don’t worry if you’ve never so much as stroked a horse before! By the end of the day you’ll be trotting happily around the countryside, making memories which’ll last long after your return.

3. Cycling in Spain

Cycling in Spain

From Iceland’s crisp coastlines to Spain’s sun-kissed shores, cycling holidays in Spain are a sure-fire way to soak up not only the country’s culture, but a fair whack of sunshine while you’re at it. Fly out to the Costa del Sol and the pearly-white city of Malaga. After a quick trip to see the works of Pablo Picasso, hire an electric bike. There’s plenty of vendors across the city who rent these out cheaply and with minimal fuss involved, and they make getting from A to B (then back again) effortless and enjoyable.

4. Sailing in Greece

Sailing in Greece

The Aegean Islands are idyllic in every sense of the word. Book yourself onto a yacht trip and let their tranquil atmosphere (and accompanying sea breeze) wash right over you. This is great alternative to taking a cruise around the region. You won’t be sharing a boat with as many people, for a start, and you’ll also be able to visit the smaller, lesser-known ports that the bigger vessels simply can’t get to. The tepid waters here also make for great swimming conditions, so bring your bathing suit!

5. Birdwatching in Madeira (Portugal)

Birdwatching Madeira

Madeira’s Atlantic coastlines are blessed with a wide array of birdlife. Find a good spot, then get the binoculars out and look out for canaries, chaffinches, kestrels and moorhens, amongst other types. September is a particularly interesting month to visit due to migration patterns, which can lead to flocks of sandpipers, herons and sandpipers making their way to the Portuguese island. After a long day spent birdwatching, enjoy a delicious meal from one of Fugal’s many restaurants.

Whether on the mainland or on nearby islands, European holidays are made for active travelers. Uncover beautiful natural landscapes or simply become one with nature – whatever you choose to do, it won’t be long before you’re planning your next adventure here.
