Tooth Troubles - Problems to Watch for in Growing Children

Tooth problems like these should be evaluated by an orthodontist.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends all children get a check-up with an AAO orthodontist at the first sign of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age 7. By then, enough permanent teeth have arrived for orthodontists to evaluate the "bite," meaning the way teeth and jaws come together.

Parents can be on the look-out for too much or too little space between teeth, front teeth that do not meet when back teeth are closed, top teeth that are positioned behind the bottom teeth, and upper teeth that sit signficantly forward of the bottom teeth. These are all reasons to see an orthodontist, as are the following:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Jaws that shift or make sounds
  • Speech difficulties
  • Biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
  • Facial imbalance
  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth

Most AAO orthodontists provide complimentary or low-cost initial consultations.

Members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) help children, teenagers and adults achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.

Orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities to correctly align teeth and jaws. After graduating from dental school, orthodontists receive an additional two to three years of education in orthodontics at an accredited orthodontic residency program. Only orthodontists can be members of the AAO.

Founded in 1900, the AAO is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization. It represents more than 19,000 orthodontist members throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. The AAO encourages and sponsors key research to enable its members to provide the highest quality of care to patients, and is committed to educating the public about the need for, and benefits of, orthodontic treatment.
