I used to LOVE these things as a kid and for a while McDonald’s didn’t offer them. But they are back in force and better than ever. If you want a slightly kinder and gentler versionthat you can make at home, check out my recipe:
Homemade Low Fat Shamrock Shake:
- 2 cups non-fat frozen yogurt (I used Kemp’s Brand)
- 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk
- ½ teaspoon of mint extract (I prefer my very minty but you can decrease this to ¼ t which is more in line with the mint level in a McDonald’s Shamrockshake)
- *1/4 teaspoon of freshly grated lime zest
- Optional: 3-4 drops of green food coloring
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend to desired consistency. I like mine just thick enough to drink through a straw with a littlework. You can add extra almond milk if needed to thin it down.
*The secret ingredient is lime zest! I do believe that McDonald’s has an element of citrus in their shake. The lime zest willbrighten up the flavor and really enhances the mint.
The green food coloring is optional. My husband insisted on making them greenbut I prefer to have my shakes to be ‘white mint’ and skip the yucky food coloring (I’m sensitive to Yellow #5 which is in a lot of green food coloring)
How healthy is this? Not really - - it’s still full of sugar and theingredient label for non-fat frozen yogurt reads like a science project. BUT, St. Patties Day comes but oncea year so enjoy! You’ll even save a few calories over the McDonald’s version.

We got about 6 inches of snow last night and my kids are home from school (can you believe a snow day on March 17!) but we are having these today instead of hotcocoa to celebrate the holiday.
