We recently celebrated the Ad Council’s 65th Annual Public Service Award Dinner, where we recognize the industries and individuals who support the Ad Council and our public service campaigns. During the inspiring show, we make it our mission to recognize the everyday people who have been personally impacted by the work that we do – putting a human face to the issues we deal with and providing inspiration to change-makers everywhere.
Through the power of cinematography and detailed storytelling, Adobe created four videos pro bono highlighting inspiring individuals from our campaigns – Nikia Hammonds-Blakely (Breast Cancer Risk Education), Jimmie & Mindy Beall (LGBT Acceptance), Tiarra Barrera-Hammond (Job Training & Employment) and Hector Adames (Gun Safety) – who have overcome tragedy and challenges with courage and determination.
“These are the stories that give us everything we need,” Lisa Sherman, Ad Council CEO and President, said. “When we’re feeling frustrated or just plain tired, these stories give us the three essentials to keep going: hope, purpose, and proof that good works.”
To see their uplifting and heartfelt stories, check out the videos below!

Nikia Hammonds-Blakely

At just 16 years old, Nikia got a diagnosis that would forever change her life: breast cancer. At the time, she was an average student, but once she beat her cancer and decided to make the most of her life, she became the first person in her family to go to college. Nikia soon learned a startling and alarming fact—that black women are dying of breast cancer at a rate 40% higher than white women. It was after she joined Susan G. Komen to become an advocate for breast health that Nikia learned her cancer was back. This time she had the support and knowledge to better face it head-on.

Jimmie & Mindy Beall

Most Americans don’t realize that it’s still legal to be fired, evicted or denied some government services for being gay in 30 states in the U.S. Jimmie Beall was unexpectedly fired from her job as a teacher when school officials had questions about her sexuality. When same-sex marriage was legalized, Jimmie and Mindy were the first same-sex couple in their county to marry and today are passionate advocates for LGBT rights.

Tiarra Barrera-Hammond

Last year, Goodwill® helped prepare more than 288,000 people for new jobs or career advancement. Thanks to Goodwill’s job training and employment programs, Tiarra went from being homeless to a registered nurse, finding success in both her career and life.

Hector Adames

In the U.S., 4.6 million kids live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun. Most are intended to provide security, but in the wrong hands, they can bring tragedy. It’s why Hector is now a passionate advocate for gun safety.
