Saving Dogs
Years ago, when our author Joyce Gioia spoke at a meeting of The American Boarding Kennels Association, the favorite dog treat was dried pigs' ears. The problem was that that though dogs were crazy for them, pigs' ears were not very healthy---low in digestibility and high in fat. Now, years later, dogs have a new favorite treat, Bully Sticks.

Bully Sticks are "healthy, 100 percent digestible, baked beef muscle treats that most dogs love"---with none of the downside that pigs' ears had. Plus, the sticks are actually healthy for our furry friends. They promote dental and gum health, deliver added protein and vitamins, contribute to a shiny, healthy coat, support strong muscle tone, and even improve brain function. However, in spite of the fact that, they are very healthy for our beloved canines, there was a big problem: once the dogs had chewed them down to the last inch and a half, the sticks became choking hazards or even worse they could cause bowel blockages.
