From the journal of the S.O.B.:

As we head into the last week of June, we also embrace the first day of summer. And it sure has come in with a bang. Snow in the mountains, floods in the plains, fire in the west, and heat in the South. So how are you planning on spending the next couple of months?

With kids on different school schedules, telecommuting part of our lives, and travel itineraries disrupted because of world events, most of us need to be ready to change at a moment’s notice. Some of you have kids still living at home (even the adult ones), others have grand kids you want to come for part of the summer. Yet others just want to relax.

Whatever your choice, it’s important to relax, read a great book and investigate a new “something.” I was looking out my window to the beautiful bay by my building and watching all the boats going by, some of them docking at a restaurant my family and I frequented when we went out on our boat.

I got to thinking. Water, boating, swimming, water skiing was such a part of my life for so many years and I haven’t done it at all since my husband passed away and I had radiation and chemo. I have substituted by going to concerts, plays, lunches with friends, and learning new things on the computer. It’s a whole new life and one I have adapted to pretty well.

I want to encourage you all not to pine for the past, but to get excited about the future. I am looking forward to my belated birthday trip to Greece (courtesy of my son), my new life (eventually) in California and a new business I’m starting with another octogenarian (to be announced shortly).  What’s on your agenda?

Dr. Gayle Carson, Chief S.O.B. has announced the 2018b Spunky Broad of the Year.  And she is Dolly Parton, a prime example of what a woman over 50 can still achieve.

An extraordinary businesswoman, out of this world entertainer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actress, author, and a philanthropist, Dolly Parton is a testament to what women can achieve.  At 72, she is continuing to have massive influence in the world of entertainment and her Dollywood Theme Park continues to thrive with new exhibits and attractions that the public adores.

Married to her husband for over 50 years, she is an example of someone who blends family and professional life with amazing dexterity and humor.  A Spunky Old Broad is someone who distinguishes herself by her uniqueness, intellect, enthusiasm, dedication, selflessness and spunky. Dolly certainly epitomizes all of those.

Dr. Gayle says “Women over 50 are like fine wine.  They only get better with age and I am delighted to have Dolly Parton as our Spunky Old Broad of the Year.”

Gayle also says “I started the S.O.B, movement because I found that women over 50 were thinking that it was all over because they hit the magic number of 50.  I knew that they had everything it took to start new careers, develop a passion into a business and start thinking about putting themselves first.  And I was right. Right now re-invention is the name of the game.

Gayle will be addressing the East Bay Women’s Conference  in California on just that subject next month.
