The Caring Generation® Talk Radio Dealing With Negative Elderly Parents

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, October 9, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® originally aired from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is "Dealing With Negative Elderly Parents." Special guest Cara Conway from Paws With a Cause shares information about specially trained service dogs.

Elderly parents experience changes in health—both physical and mental—and in daily routines that can be upsetting and worrisome. The emotional effects of these changes may result in behaviors that adult children view as negative. Is this negative behavior indicative of stress, worry, fear, and witnessing health declines that make the future uncertain?

The passing of time changes roles within families when caregiving becomes a need. Elderly parents raised and took care of their children. Now adult children and elderly parents come together, and relationships may be difficult This life transition can toss any normal life up into the air and feel burdensome for the caregiver.

The idea of grieving losses, time, health, and well-being are part of caregiving. Grieving and caregiving are two ideas that we don't normally combine. When we think about the role of being a caregiver and of an elderly parent experiencing physical and mental declines, it is easier to see that grieving is part of the relationship.

The caregiver trades part of their life to become a caregiver. The elderly parent faces a transition that involves poor or declining health, being able to do less and having to rely on others for help.  When we look at the situation from a perspective of loss it may be easier to see where negative feelings and attitudes enter into caregiving relationships.

By allowing the concerns of the elderly parent and the caregiver to be heard, steps can be taken to move situations from negative to the positive. These steps may include investigating underlying health causes, being realistic about problem-solving, implementing changes to the caregiving relationships and setting boundaries. It is possible for caregivers to feel more positive and in control of caregiving relationships with elderly parents who may be perceived as negative.

Each week, Caring Generation® radio features a special guest. On October 9, Cara Conway, the Public Relations and Social Media Coordinator for Paws With A Cause joins the radio show. Paws With A Cause is a national nonprofit organization that supports people with disabilities through custom-trained assistance dogs.
