The Caring Generation® Radio The Ultimate Caregiver Survival Skills

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, December 4, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is creating the Ultimate Caregiver Survival Skills Kit for caregivers. Pamela shares family caregiving scenarios and provides specific skills that caregivers can use to manage care for elderly parents or loved ones.

Special guest, Steve Rubin of the Waves Project, shares solutions for PTSD and Stress. Veterans who return home from active duty are at an increased risk of developing mental health conditions.

The benefits of SCUBA improve overall mental health, restore marriages, and family relationships for disabled veterans. The Waves project is a 501C3 organization that provides scuba training and activities for disabled veterans and a family member. The Waves Project is based in Southern California and offers programs in other locations.

In thinking of developing caregiver survival skills, looking at the "event or the problem" to develop an initial solution is the first goal. The second goal is developing a long term plan to be prepared for unexpected situations and to avoid caregiving crises.

The challenge is that if the plan were totally up to the caregiver, implementing the plan would be simple. In most cases, the care plan involves the participation of an elderly parent, a grandparent, or a spouse, which may complicate the situation.

Trying to work through caregiving situations with elderly loved ones involves talking about and building agreement about a plan. Whoever knew that being a caregiver could be so complicated? It's no wonder that caregivers need survival skills to be successful.

Being a caregiver has two modes – the "try" mode and the "do" mode. When caregivers become exhausted or feel out of control, they lean toward the "try" mode. Exhaustion or feeling out of control is when caregivers say, "I will try -- to do this or that," because the caregiver is uncertain.

When a more serious problem arises, there is pressure to take action. For example, mom or dad has to lose 20 lbs. to make walking easier. Otherwise, a wheelchair will be the only option. The doorways in the home are not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

Or a caregiver is concerned about being able to keep a job and continue to care for an elderly parent. Not all workplaces are supportive of working caregivers.

Difficult and immediate situations benefit from creating the ultimate caregiver survival skills kit. Pamela D, Wilson supports family caregivers and corporations interested in supporting working caregiver employees through unique programs.
