The Caring Generation® Radio Show Tired of Caring for Elderly Parents

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, December 18, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is Caregiver Exhaustion: Tired of Caring for Elderly Parents.  Pamela shares tips and strategies for managing caregiver exhaustion. Caregiver exhaustion results from stress and the day in day out wear and tear of being a caregiver.

Special guest, Dr. Brooks Cash from the University of Texas Health Science Center, and the McGovern School of Medicine in Houston Talks about Smoking and Digestive Problems.  Dr. Cash is the director of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition for the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, Texas.  Many consumers will be surprised to learn that smoking results in digestive problems and stomach concerns like GERD, Hiatal hernias, and other health conditions.

Many believe that smoking relieves stress. Research confirms that nicotine initially supports a sense of relaxation but then increases feelings of anxiety. Feeling exhausted affects the body physically and mentally. Physically we feel tired and lack energy. Mentally we become unable to focus. Minds become scattered and worried about keeping up with daily projects.

Being unrealistic or overestimating how much can be accomplished in a single day or another time period results in caregivers feeling overwhelmed and stressed. The feeling of being overscheduled continuously—or always behind—results in being tired of caring for elderly parents.

The feeling of being unable to keep up is a component of caregiver exhaustion and being unable to manage emotions. Guilt and regret results when caregivers react emotionally. Relationships with elderly parents and other family members suffer.

Being tired of caring for elderly parents affects the health and wellbeing of the caregiver. Statistics support this fact. According to an article by Schulze in JAMA, caregivers have a 63% higher mortality rate versus non-caregivers. According to a Stanford University study, 40% of Alzheimer's caregivers die before the person for whom they care.  Other statistics indicate a 30% rate of caregiver deaths before the loved one needing care.
