Challenges in Healthcare

Challenges in healthcare affect the lives of caregivers and aging adults in a variety of ways. Part of the challenge for caregivers is trying to learn a new language of medical terminology and work within the healthcare system where providers seem rushed or inattentive.

What caregiver hasn't tried to advocate for care and become frustrated by confusing or unclear information? Part of the daily life of caregivers includes high-stress situations where emotions run hot and cold.

Insights from a Certified Senior Care Advisor

In the typical day to day of being a caregiver—caregivers don't realize that it is their responsibility to create goals, gain agreement, negotiate, and push forward with healthcare providers. This lack of identifying responsibility is how expectations and dreams fall apart. Caregiving advocacy includes hard work, setting goals, planning, and follow through to ensure implementation.

The healthcare system has policies, standards, and procedures for care that confuse many caregivers and aging adults. A sense of vulnerability exists by many family caregivers who feel that the healthcare system has too much control over the care that elderly parents or a spouse may receive. Concerns also exist about trust, self-interest and the high profits that health insurance companies make at the expense of patients.

Wilson, a certified senior care advisor, and a care manager shares her experiences during this caregiving radio program to offer advice to caregivers who want better care for elderly loved ones. By focusing on facts and the care of loved ones, caregivers can avoid emotional traps that make getting the care they want for elderly parents or a spouse more challenging.
