The Caring Generation® How The Healthcare System Ignores the Elderly
Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, December 11, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® originally aired from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.
The caregiving topic for this week's program is "How the Healthcare System Ignores the Elderly" Special guest, Dr. Mary Wyman, from the University of Wisconsin, shares information about bias against older adults from family caregivers and the healthcare system.
Wilson shares, "In my 20 years as a healthcare advocate, I experienced bias from physicians and the healthcare system who viewed my clients as elderly and undeserving of care. I also worked with others who made decisions based on their beliefs without consulting me as the medical power of attorney and decision-maker. I was fired by physicians for disagreeing with them about care for my elderly clients. I also chose to leave medical practices that I felt were unwilling to offer the care my clients needed"
Families today must learn how to advocate for care for elderly parents. Middle-aged adults must also learn to advocate for their care. Women are taken less seriously by the healthcare system. Men more readily receive treatment.
This disparity in treatment is the consumer's responsibility to solve by becoming more educated about health and well-being. Consumers in the healthcare system who are more proactive and attend to regular medical care fare better from a long-term health perspective.
Regular medical appointments and establishing a relationship with a physician are one predictor of receiving better than average care. While younger generations view emergency walk-in clinics, also called "doc in a box," as an expeditious way to receive healthcare treatment, in the long run, this is short term thinking.
Going to the doctor is not at the top of our list when we are young and problem-free. Taking time off work is challenging. Concerns exist that employers may become aware of being a caregiver for an elderly parent or of an individual having health concerns.
Making health and well-being a priority is the only way that costs in the healthcare system will decrease. Annual physicals and bloodwork are preventative measures to identify and treat early health concerns before they become significant. By becoming engaged in health and well-being, consumers will be able to avoid health diagnosis and costly care later in life.
Each week, Caring Generation® radio features a special guest. On December 11, Dr. Mary Wyman from the University of Wisconsin joins the program. Dr. Wyman has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and a minor in Neuroscience. Her focus is aging research that includes mental health in the elderly, depression, coping with chronic illness, health care decision making. Dr. Wyman works with the VA Medical Center in Wisconsin.
