I used to travel to Hawaii every year to teach Ten Steps to a Federal Job and the Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spouses at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu from 2010 until 2019. But for the last three years, there’s been no travel to Hawaii, and I sure do miss it. The reason I did travel earlier and taught the classes each year is because there are lot of military bases and Federal jobs in Hawaii. Ten Steps to a Federal Job® Certification Training in Hawaii

Here are Deb Nakashima’s Top 4 Reasons for taking the Ten Steps Certification. Deb is the Program Manager for the Work for Warriors Hawaii Employment Program, which provides career services to the Hawaii National Guard.

1. The employment situation in Hawaii after the pandemic. The Federal government, specifically the Department of the Defense, became one of the largest industry employers in Hawaii when tourism and hospitality shut down during the pandemic. The Federal government never shut down or stopped hiring. This development increased awareness and desirability in the community to seek jobs in the Federal sector. Hawaii is unique in that we are one of a few states that have all active branches of defense (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard), including all Reserve Components, and the National Guard. Geographic isolation of the islands also means that civilians can’t drive to another state to seek work. Federal contract jobs are also a large component of civilian jobs in the state, and many times these employers will look for Federally styled resumes.
2. The ability to work with a large population of clients. Due to the large presence of active duty military in Hawaii, many service members transition out of active duty in the state, and they need to be prepared for their next career phase. They and their family members may seek Federal jobs. Many times it is to stay in Hawaii. Also, with the importance of Hawaii to the military presence in the Pacific Region, it is a way to stay connected to the military. But securing a Federal job also means that they will have the ability to transfer to other Federal jobs, should they choose to leave the state – to go overseas or to the continental US.
3. The ability to work remotely and with private business jobseekers. The ability to understand and write a Federal resume, and to know how to target a resume, serves well for private sector jobs also. Many employers and job announcements now look for keywords and accomplishments, just as in the Federal sector. Understanding how to write a Federal resume provides solid training to any resume building, not just Federal. It is a skill that is transferable, no matter where you go. Right now, we have staff working remotely, with the pandemic, and we never lost our ability to help clients, and maintained a full work load, as the Federal government never stopped hiring! Learning how to understand and write a Federal resume will help in all aspects of career counseling.
4. Learning about Veterans Preference and all the other hiring authorities in the Federal government. This is one of the most important lessons learned for those of us who work with Veterans and Reserve Component members (on inactive status or retired). For Reservists and National Guard members especially, understanding that there are differences in definitions of being a Veteran for hiring in the Federal government is so important! For many of us who work with clients, there is much to know about getting into the Federal system. Stumbling blocks can be not understanding what Schedule A is, or what forms are needed to be submitted when you apply for a Federal job. Such knowledge can mean the difference between a candidate being referred or not getting referred for an interview. It is critical to helping our clients in securing Federal employment to know the different hiring authorities and to understand what questions to ask your clients. After being certified as a CFJST/CFCC, you will be able to understand this and other factors in Federal hiring, and more importantly be able to explain it to your clients.
