Teaching Young Kids Dollars and Sense
Imagine being in elementary school and having the opportunity to learn how to manage money and run a business from Warren Buffet, possibly the most successful investor on the planet, himself? That is exactly what his "Secret Millionaires Club" delivers!
The problem is simple
According to the Council for Economic Education, only 17 of the United States require high school students to take a course in personal finance, so most of them graduate without this important life skill. Though some states are beginning to add personal finance to their Kindergarten to 12th Grade standards, there is almost a universal lack of financial education. This lack of education leaves the task to parents, many of whom are not very good at managing their own finances. It is widely believed that the habits students develop while they are young can make a huge difference throughout their lives.
The solution is elegant
With webisodes featuring the Oracle of Omaha himself, Warren Buffett's Secret Millionaires Club (SMC) Learn & Earn program provides kids with an opportunity to learn about financial fitness, entrepreneurship, and business in a fun and engaging manner. Now in its 5th successful year, no other program combines animated episodes with teaching financial and entrepreneurial lessons to ensure lifelong good habits.
Not additive, it is the math curriculum for that grade
This proven educational initiative is different from other programs which are additive to the regular math curriculum, placing teachers in the difficult position of deciding what not to teach to make time for financial literacy. Developed in partnership with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, this regular math curriculum engages students 7 to 14 with an animated series featuring Warren Buffett as a cartoon character who mentors students through entrepreneurial and life adventures. Brilliantly executed, this multi-platform program introduces concepts through in-school, at-home, and after-school activities aligned with each online animated episode. There is also an online comic book created by Archie Comics. No stone has been left unturned!
Challenging students to start and run their own businesses
The accompanying Grow Your Own Business Challenge (GYOB) is an annual national entrepreneurship contest that offers a real-world challenge for these young students. GYOB finalists enjoy all-expenses-paid trips to Omaha and lunch with Buffet himself, plus shares of Berkshire Hathaway B-class stock. The two top contestants each win $5000USD.
Enormous media success
Having been covered in the US on every major network, including NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS, CNN, CNBC, AP, Business Week, Reuters, and more, this successful program has garnered 3.2 Billion media impressions to date---a remarkable achievement for any single program.
A model for teaching youngsters
This program offers an effective role model for teaching young children important life skills. The program team that produces this unique program calls itself "Genius Brands International". We think the name is altogether fitting! The program manager is By Kids For Kids (BKFK.com); it is also obvious that young people helped to design this successful learning opportunity for their peers. We hope to see other programs from celebrities, teaching vital skills for a productive life. What a remarkable contribution they could make!
