Blog18BAn evolution of consciousness is occurring on this planet—underlined by increasing awareness that we are not separate from our environment, and we are responsible for taking care of it. Protecting the ecosystem is a huge and multifaceted task as population grows, overconsumption occurs, and the biophysical environment is degraded, sometimes irrevocably.

According to the World Health Organization, pollution is responsible for one in four deaths among children ages five and under. Children’s developing organs, immune systems, and smaller bodies and airways make them especially vulnerable to toxins. Unfortunately, environmental factors such as air pollution and dirty water contribute to the deaths of 1.7 million children every year.

The task of “saving the planet” may feel like an insurmountable problem at times, but here are some simple tips we, as individuals, can follow to help reduce pollution:

  • Turn off lights, computers, and electrical appliances when not in use

  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances

  • Participate in your local utility’s energy conservation programsBlog18A

  • Limit driving by carpooling, using public transportation, biking, and walking

  • Combine errands for fewer car trips

  • Keep your automobile well-tuned and maintained, and avoid excess idling

  • Seal containers of household cleaners, workshop chemicals and solvents, and garden chemicals

  • Advocate for emission reductions from power plants and for more stringent national vehicle emission standards

Why is all of this important, and what will help to ensure change? Imagine a planet where the environment promotes and sustains healthy living—a planet that is a safe and evolutionary place for all inhabitants. Imagine a planet that was not meant to self-destruct, but instead be a home where PEACE can reign. Obviously, this shift requires a balance of male and female energy in which the patriarchal relationship paradigm (which may be in denial about effects of pollution—as evidenced by numerous politicians) is replaced. An appropriate balance between the energies within each individual and a relationship where the divine feminine and divine masculine serve one another, both within the person and with the external other, is required.

Blog18CIt is interesting to think that our relationship to the earth—how we feel about her, how deeply we connect/disconnect with her, and treat her—is often a mirror of our personal and cultural relationship with the feminine, and with our own mothers. Looking at our limiting beliefs and working towards healing the distortions we carry would go a long way in providing healing for our entire planet.

What does your connection to the earth feel like? Do you feel a sacred connection to our planet, or are there ways you might be able to develop that relationship? To what degree have you been aware of environmental pollution and its effects? Are you involved in activities that can help reduce air pollution? Comments and ideas are most welcome!
