Spooktacular Pet Treats

Halloween isn't just for the kids. Pet owners across the country will be celebrating this "spooktacular" holiday with their four-legged friends. If you want to bring a little holiday joy to your pets consider baking them homemade Halloween pet treats.

Halloween is a holiday for the whole family, including pets—59 percent of pet owners say that their animals will participate in Halloween this year. Of this group, 65 percent say that they are planning to give their pets Halloween-themed treats or toys. Some popular pet food brands are selling Halloween/Fall treats, such as BLUE Buffalo's Boo Bars Mummy Morsels. But with a little time and a few ingredients, you can make your own frightfully yummy pet treats for Fido and Fluffy.

Halloween Pet Treats

Listed below are four pet food recipes for you to consider.

  • Taste of fall dog treats. My Baking Addition has three unique dog treat recipes that would be great for Halloween: peanut butter pumpkin, sweet potato, and apple carrot. These yummy treats can also benefit your pup's health. Peanut butter is a good source of protein, the antioxidants found in sweet potatoes can also help with cancer prevention, and the carrots and apples have fiber that's great for their digestive system. For an extra dose of fun, you can use Halloween-themed cookie cutters (such as ghosts or jack-o-lanterns) to shape the cookies.
  • Cinnamon dog treats. Cinnamon is the most common scent for fall. So, consider making your pup mini cinnamon bun treats with whole-wheat flour, honey, cinnamon, and finely chopped nuts. Babble has a yummy recipe listed here.
  • Pumpkin pie cat treats. Get in the Halloween spirit by baking your cat pumpkin-flavored treats. This recipe from PawCulture includes pumpkin, carrots, brown rice flour, oatmeal, and applesauce. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so it's good for your cat's digestive health. Just like the dog treats, you can also use Halloween-themed cookie cutters for extra fun.
  • Autumn cat treats. Sweet potatoes are a delicious fall vegetable and a great ingredient for your Halloween cat treats. This recipe from Wellness Mama is made with sweet potatoes, canned fish, and coconut flour and oil. Sweet potatoes will provide your kitty with vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and beta-carotene. Plus, your kitty will love the fishy taste.

Bonus: Trick-or-Doggie-Treat. Sometimes pets tag along with their trick-or-treating families on Halloween. If you have any leftover treats consider handing them out on Halloween. Put them in a separate baggie so the kids don't accidentally eat them, and be sure to label them with the ingredients. The neighbors will be impressed.
