Selling Your Books by the Truckload

with Ted Rogers and Vickie Mullins

Vickie MullinsTed RogersYou can sell a few books one at a time on your website. You can sell a few dozen books BOR when you speak. You might even get a speaking client to buy a couple of hundred books to give to the audience.

But how could you sell *thousands* of books at a time? Is that even possible?

It is, and in our next teleseminar you can hear from people who have done it.

Here?s an opportunity to expand your thinking, to go far beyond what you may have thought you could do when it comes to marketing your books.

Come hear what these big thinkers have to say, and learn how you can follow their example.

More details of this session below, then register or pre-order the CD or MP3. Note: Everyone who registers for the teleseminar will get the MP3 recording of the session for free.

Miscellaneous Tips

Amazon.com book reviewers ? Shep Hyken

Check out this article from Cornell University about ?the secret world? of Amazon book reviewers.

(Editors? note: Shep conducted a info-packed SNN teleseminar on Little Things That Have a Big Payoff: Secrets to Making Real Money in the Speaking and Consulting Business. You can order the CD or MP3.)

High-def tip ? Traci Brown

The kind of makeup you use is really important. Most makeup has what amounts to glitter in it and this can make for funny reflections and shadows on your face. Look at your makeup in the sun and if it glitters use something else. A local TV anchor suggested I use the GloMinerals brand and I?ve found it to be nice. It?s spendy but worth it.

Scientific study proves deepening your voice increases memorability! ? Ian Percy

As reported in The Week, a study at Aberdeen University found that women are much more likely to recall men with deep booming voices. This is precisely why male speakers should smoke cigars, drink Cognac and practice sounding like Scott McCain. Squeaky-voiced speakers just don?t cut it. The timbre of a man?s voice communicates a ?genetic quality as well as behavioral traits? that women find alluring in a long-term mate. Notes researcher Dr. Kevin Allen, ?We think this is evidence that evolution has shaped women?s ability to remember information associated with desirable men,? All this reported in the Journal of Memory and Cognition. Now there?s a down side to everything. Unfortunately another study done at McMaster University found that men with deep voices were also more likely to be accused of infidelity. Another case of ?damned if you do, and damned if you don?t.?

(Editors? note: Ian discussed lots of thought-provoking ideas in his SNN teleseminar Using Depth to Differentiate: How to Set Yourself Apart Through Insight and Substance. You can order the MP3 recording.)

Audio book creation ? Allen Klein

I recently turned one of my out-of-print books into an audiobook using Audio Creation Exchange (acx.com). It was easy and cost very little. The only expense I had was for permission to use some music and for the cover artwork. I got a great person to produce and record the book through ACX. He is a former teacher and actor. There is also an option for narrating the book yourself. Great distribution, too. The audiobook is available on Audible.com, Amazon, and iTunes.

Audience response system ? Donald Cooper

I?ve just worked for the fourth time in the USA with Michelle Ash ( michelle@arsintel.com, 702/340-3012), whose company, ARS Intel, delivers a superior audience response system experience. If you use audience response in your speaking work, Michelle is the lady to chat with.

Technology Tips

Screen-sharing service ? Rob Shore

Join.me is a tremendous free screen-sharing service that we have used to replace Glance.net. The reason? It?s completely free and you can hand off control to another participant. Better still is the fact that join.me has smartphone apps that replicate the desktop experience perfectly. On a recent call, when all attendees were requested to be in their office and at a desktop computer, none were. Rather than needing to reschedule or lose the impact of the visual portion of the presentation, everyone installed the app in minutes and was able to follow along.

Laptop battery sources ? Ken Dwight

When replacing my laptop?s AC adapter I discovered my Toshiba?s adapter was listed at $99, with a one-year warranty (from toshibadirect.com). Twenty-eight of the 35 reviews from previous buyers were horrible, giving it one star, the lowest possible rating. My own experience with the original adapter and one previous replacement were similar.

The local Batteries Plus store ordered a replacement unit and had it the next day for $64.99 with a 2-year warranty. It?s a generic Ray-O-Vac adapter with the proper connector for the specific computer. It is physically much larger than the original unit from Toshiba. The construction is much heavier-duty than the flimsy product Toshiba sells. It uses a completely different power cord which means an additional purchase if you want to have a power cord at home and one at the office.

However, laptoprescue.com?s price for this adapter is $29.95, and carries a lifetime warranty. The reviews look excellent, and the unit shown in the photo appears to be the same size as the Toshiba part. Which means that, unlike the Ray-O-Vac adapter, this one should fit in the original computer case.

Email tip ? Victoria Maxwell

When replying to a client?s email, I delete their email address before I type just in case I click send or reply accidentally before I?ve finished my message (or included that attachment). When I?ve finished writing and reviewing, I just insert the address and send, ensuring I always send a professionally written email.

Rethinking PowerPoint ? Merit Gest

I recently started a workshop with PowerPoint as originally planned. During the session I felt disconnected from the group. At the break I decided to do the second half of the program without the slides. What a difference in energy! A speaker friend in the audience commented that the second half felt more authentic. Note to self: PowerPoint is not always necessary. The amount of time I spent building the slide deck would have been much better spent writing my book or practicing the delivery of the message.

Choosing to open a new window from a link ? Ken Braly

Most browsers allow the user to *choose* to open a link in a new tab/window, typically by holding down the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Command key (Mac) when they click. That way the user can make the choice whether they want a new window.

Travel Tips

One traveler?s tips and tricks for finding the best online airfare deals.

Requests for Info / Advice

Cartoonist wanted ? Nancy Lininger

I am reaching out for any recommendations (from first-hand knowledge to avoid hours of endless searching) specifically related to securities (financial) regulations.

Headset mic recommendations? ? Rebecca Morgan

If you own a headset mic what?s your recommendation? Countryman, Shure or ??? Suggestions on what to look for? I?ll compile the responses for SNN.
