February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, which is a critical observance for everyone because 85 per cent of all American adults suffer from moderate to severe gum disease and most don't even know it!

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a silent, painless bacterial infection that often is completely undetected or ignored until severe gum and bone destruction take over.

Those who find out they have gum disease often choose to suffer rather than to endure treatment or undergo traditional routine surgery. But Dr. Joseph R. Nemeth, DDS, national expert on gum disease and seamless treatment, has used Gum Awareness Month to make it clear that gum disease sufferers should never choose to opt out of treatment.

"With the advances in treatment of gum disease there is absolutely no sound reason to choose not to be treated out of fear," stresses Dr. Nemeth of the Nemeth Center for Cosmetic/Laser Periodontics.

Dr. Nemeth is the first gum specialist in Michigan to be trained and certified to use Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation by the technique's originator, Dr. John Chao.  "This technique gives our patients another option for gum recession treatment and they love it," adds Dr. Nemeth. "The results are immediate, long lasting, and very gratifying. With the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, there is typically no cutting, no incisions or sutures, much less discomfort, and very little downtime."

Other patients of Dr. Nemeth choose the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) for their natural teeth with periodontal disease. LANAP is a surgical laser therapy to treat gum disease by using regeneration rather than resection. The laser therapy removes bacteria, stops bone loss, reinforces bone stability, reduces inflammation and discomfort, and actually encourages new bone growth.

The benefits of LANAP are: less pain; faster healing; reduced risk of infection; decreased sensitivity; less bleeding; less post-treatment discomfort; little or no gingival recession.

The importance of better public understanding of gum disease is evidenced by the fact that the month has been declared by 36 governors, and has gained the support of thousands of doctors. The crusade not only stresses that gum disease is a silent killer but it can cause several other serious diseases and can be passed on to your children.

"I have been in practice long enough to know how many people are completely unaware they have gum disease and I am well aware of the fear of treatment held by those who discover they do," stresses Dr. Nemeth. "I am willing to do what I can during Gum Disease Awareness Month to help all Americans understand that Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation and LANAP offers highly effective, painless and comfortable treatment options not available just a few years ago. In February I will make myself available for interviews and to speak to the community about this all important topic."
