Been There Myself

We often feel defeated when things are not going the way we want. Maybe you have worked a long time with some success, but then things begin to shift right before your eyes. You may make a few changes but the change isn’t enough, and you begin to question your next steps.

Defeat and possibly depression may take over when things are not going right with your job, business or career. You may feel as if you have gone down a rabbit hole entering into unfamiliar territory. Yes, it may seem that way initially. The problem is that you have remained in your comfort zone for a long while, but much has changed during that time period. Nothing seems to be working well, and no matter how many hours you put in the results are dismal.

Trust Yourself

Give yourself time to sort things out.  It’s human nature to be discouraged, have a pity party, and feed yourself excuses (along with the ice cream). But the smart approach is to also give yourself a deadline to get over it!  

When the alarm rings, it is time to rise again. Yes!  Get up, wash and dust yourself off. It is time to pull out your Rocky music or whatever motivates you. The time has come to begin anew with a clean slate. Remember, you are still the talented and creative you!

Take some alone time to figure out what calls to you to continue your work. Figure out what would excite you and write it down. Add all the elements to turn your initial idea into a robust one, and include how you may help others. Your thought may be to give a percentage to a homeless shelter or to volunteer at a boys or girls club, home for the elderly or a youth-at-risk organization. Maybe you want to start you own non-profit. You will know the right approach as the ideas come together as one.

Once you are clear and have everything in place, the money part will be the least of your worries. As people see you in action helping communities, they volunteer to assist. The giving back is the magic for lessening the money woes.

Valeri’s Story

For the team at PWIC, it took us some time to pinpoint our mission and how we wanted to execute it. We knew we wanted to change lives globally. We used to work with women to assist them in fulfilling their almost forgotten dreams. We did that successfully for years. Then things began to shift, and I could not figure it out. I even had another person try to run my company so I could do something else. That was definitely not the right answer, and things took a turn for the worse.

I went back to the drawing board and asked myself what it was that I wanted to do. When I was about eight years old, I realized that many people did not have the basics. These people did not have enough money for shelter, food, etc. I saw children who did not have coats to wear to school. I didn’t like to be cold myself, and so it bothered me a lot and was never to be forgotten.  

Our Mission

Our new mission would be to make sure that everybody had access to the basics. One added touch would be providing support to help fulfill their dreams, too. The thinking is similar to first helping people to walk and then helping them to run!

My team and I worked with a consultant to help us get started with creating a plan for how we would accomplish this mission. We decided to gather women humanitarian leaders to be our voice to the world.

Our work began to feel right again. My happiness and excitement returned. My team is excited too. Our trajectory completely shifted to a new day where each of us became highly motivated to succeed together.

Moral of the Story

It does not matter if you work for someone or if you own a company. If things are not working as you would like, most likely it is time for a change. You still have all your talents and knowledge. There is no failure as long as you learn from the lessons of what does not work to move full steam ahead!

You just need to come to terms with what your intuition says you want to do and then do it! Always include giving back to help change lives – this is where the juice of life resides!

1. Write down what you wish you could do right now.
2. List the education you might need to create a plan.
3. Share your idea with trusted sources to get their reaction.
4. Improve your idea given the negative feedback you will receive.
5. Highlight the portion of your idea that receives positive feedback.
6. Ask those most enthusiastic about your idea if they would like to join in.
7. Together with your new collaborators, create a plan to attain your vision.
8. Have monthly team meetings to analyze what is not working well to improve.
9. Encourage everyone to share their ideas as they occur and grow the relationships. 
10. Celebrate Success!
