Currently the top two causes of death among young people age 12–19 are automobile accidents and suicide (which until recently was third, after homicide). Since 2011, when for the first time, more than 50% of the population of the US owned a smartphone the teen suicide rate has doubled https://www.governing.com/topics/health-human-services/gov-teen-suicide.html and on average 11 teens die every day in automobile accidents caused by texting and driving https://www.victoriaadvocate.com/opinion/texting-and-driving-claims-many-more-teens-lives-than-mass/article_656fac08-3133-11e8-8e16-43d6e7bc04b5.html
Is the connection between the top two causes of death among teens the smartphone? Should the texting age and the driving age both be 16, and should Drivers Ed AND Digital Ed be mandatory before a young person is allowed to operate either?
