SPJ announces campus chapter award finalists and regional program honorees

INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists is delighted to announce a select group of campus chapters that are being honored for their work in advancing the Society’s principles, mission as well as the journalism profession itself.

Annually, SPJ’s 12 regional coordinators and directors select campus chapters and programs in their respective region that have shown overall excellence. These winners will compete for the Outstanding Campus Chapter and Campus Program of the Year awards.

The Outstanding Campus Chapter finalists are Stony Brook University from Region 1, University of Central Florida from Region 3, Ohio University from Region 4 and Arkansas Tech University from Region 12.

The Campus Program of the Year Regional Honorees are:
Region 1: Stony Brook University for holding the Region 1 conference
Region 2: University of Maryland for its “Anti-Oxford Comma Club” T-shirt
Region 3: University of Central Florida for Intern Pursuit, an internship fair
Region 4: Ohio University for an event during the Carr Van Anda awards featuring John Quiñones from ABC News
Region 5: N/A
Region 6: N/A
Region 7: N/A
Region 8: Sam Houston State University for its events on the First Amendment and freedom of information laws
Region 9: Colorado State University for its visiting journalist event
Region 10: Western Washington University for its virtual panel on covering tribes and tribal issues
Region 11: California State University, Northridge, for its Zoom event on covering protests after the murder of George Floyd
Region 12: Arkansas Tech University for its week of journalism events

Winners and honorees will be recognized at the Student Summit & Awards Program at MediaFest22, SPJ’s annual convention, in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 28.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Support excellent journalism and fight for your right to know. Become a member, give to the Legal Defense Fund or give to the SPJ Foundation.
