Quantum computing is moving from theory to reality—and it’s poised to transform how supply chains operate. In this Supply Chain Byte, Lisa Anderson explains recent breakthroughs in quantum computing, how supply chains can leverage this powerful technology and what manufacturers can do now to prepare and take advantage of these and other emerging technologies.

IBM dominates quantum computing with the most complete end-to-end quantum ecosystem in the world, and they are on track to achieve quantum advantage by 2026. They just unveiled the most powerful processor, Nighthawk, that is 30% more efficient / handles more complexity than the previous iteration.

What is quantum computing and why does it matter? It is a new type of computation that uses quantum mechanics to solve complex problems faster than the traditional computer. It matters as it is used for critical areas such as drug discovery, material science such as batteries, artificial intelligence, finance, and optimization. This is where manufacturing and the supply chain come into the mix, focused largely on optimization.

Many companies are rolling out optimization with quantum computing. For example, DHL, Volkswagen, BP and BMW have focused on quantum computing with topics ranging from forecasting, inventory management, vehicle routing, and network design. Software options have emerged starting with the leader, IBM to Google, Amazon and Microsoft. In addition, there are specialty software options such as D-Wave.

Quantum computing has vast potential to transform businesses and supply chains. Companies must keep up with the latest advances and innovations that might provide them with an advantage and be an ideal “fit” for achieving their objectives.
