conscious and deliberate creation--historical perspective

When you hear the words “conscious creation,” “deliberate creation,” “creative thought,” or “Law of Attraction,” do you cringe and dismiss these philosophies as a bunch of hooey or undocumented woo-woo beliefs? You probably aren’t alone. However, these principles actually have a historical foundation and were popular long before the release of “The Secret” documentary in March of 2006 and the cast ended up on the “Larry King Live” show eight months later.

Throughout history, humans have sought to understand the principles of the universe and the power of their minds. It’s no wonder, therefore, that the principle of creative thought or deliberate creation gained traction. Also known as the Law of Attraction, this principle posits that conscious and intentional thinking allows individuals to shape their reality and manifest their desires.

The Historical Roots of Conscious and Deliberate Creation

The roots of this principle can be traced back to ancient cultures, such as the Egyptians and Greeks, who believed in the power of the mind to influence their world. For instance, the Greek Stoics taught that the mind—or reason—could control emotions and thoughts. Furthermore, they believed that deliberate thinking was essential to achieving a sense of inner peace and happiness.

In the Old Testament, King Solomon (Proverbs 4:23) tells his sons, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.” Proverbs (23:7) also states: “As someone thinks within himself, so he is.”

3 steps for manifestation using conscious or deliberate creation--creative thoughtIn Judaism, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov taught something similar: “You are where your thoughts are, so be careful what you think. Also, the Chassidic master Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch introduced into Yiddish the adage, Tracht gut, vet zein gut, which means, “Think good, and it will be good.”

Buddha also echoed these beliefs. He said, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” Also, in The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles, and Belief, Gregg Braden writes, “In the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, it’s believed that reality can exist only where our mind creates a focus.”

Additionally, Islam encourages positive and discourages negative thinking. Muslims are also taught they will get what they hoped for if they are optimistic and hope for the good.

However, the modern concept of conscious and deliberate creation gained prominence in the early 20th century thanks to the work of New Thought and Law of Attraction proponents, such as Napoleon Hill and Esther Hicks. And yes, The Secret propelled it into popular culture. That’s why you hear people like Oprah Winfrey, Olympic athletes, and famous celebrities and speakers mention this principle.

More recently, doctors, scientists, and researchers have proven that our thoughts impact us on various levels. This includes influencing our biology and how we see ourselves and the world.

10 Quotations About Creative or Deliberate Thought

The more accepted the philosophy of conscious or deliberate creation became, the more often people of influence mentioned the creative nature of thought. Also, numerous authors and experts began exploring and writing about these concepts.

Here are 10 quotes from well-known people and my interpretation of their meaning. They reinforce the importance of using your thoughts to consciously and deliberately create whatever you desire and stress the creative nature of thoughts.

1. James Allen

Our life is what our thoughts make it. A man will find that as he alters his thoughts toward things and other people, things and other people will alter towards him.

Allen explains that when you change your thoughts about something, your experience of it changes. Not only that but what you have been thinking about may also change. Your thoughts create changes in things external to you.

2. Henry David Thoreau

The world is but a canvas to our imagination.

Thoreau’s words remind us of the endless possibilities available when we use our imagination. Your imagination involves thoughts focused on possibilities. We can create anything we desire and shape our reality in any way we choose simply by visualizing it. If you can imagine it, you can make it so.

3. Albert Einstein

Imagination is everything, it is the preview of life’s coming attractions.

Like Thoreau, Einstein tells us that what you visualize in your mind—with thoughts, pictures, and feelings—becomes the precursor to what you create. As you imagine, you focus on specific thoughts experienced as visual scenarios. And that focus helps bring what we imagine into reality.

4. Esther Hicks (Abraham)

“Your thoughts and beliefs of the past have created this moment, and all the moments up to this moment. What you are now choosing to believe and think and say will create the next moment and the next day and the next month and the next year.”

This quote from Abraham-Hicks (Esther Hicks bringing through the messages of the nonphysical group called “Abraham”) stresses the importance of your thoughts in creating your reality now and in the future. They remind you that you are a creator of your life and have the power to choose what you want to experience and manifest in this moment and in days, weeks, and years to come. And she expands thought to spoken words, which are enormously powerful.

5. Dr. Wayne Dyer

You manifest what you believe, not what you want.

Dyer describes the importance of your beliefs in manifesting what you want. He described beliefs as thoughts you keep thinking. Thus, he reminds you that wanting something is not enough. You must believe that you can have it. Additionally, if your beliefs contradict your desires, you’ll find it challenging to manifest them.

6. Gabby Bernstein

Your thoughts create your reality. Your words reinforce it.

Bernstein points out the power of words in shaping your reality. Most religions or spiritual traditions mention the power of words. For instance, the New Testament says, “In the beginning was the word.” The Jewish mystical tradition, known as Kabbalah, describes the world being created first with letters and then words. The Old Testament records God speaking the world into existence: “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Thoughts are comprised of words, and they are made more powerful when you write or speak them in addition to thinking about them.

7. Joe Dispenza

Where we put our awareness, and for how long, maps our destiny.

With this quote, Dispenza points out that your awareness—what you pay attention to (or think about)—dictates what you create. If you place your attention on one thought long enough and often enough, you are likely to bring that focused thought about into your future reality.

8. Gregg Braden

Manifestation begins with the willingness to make room in our beliefs for something that supposedly doesn’t exist. We create that ‘something’ through the force of consciousness and awareness.

With this quotation, Braden brings into the discussion the need for faith in the conscious creation process. You must believe in whatever you want to consciously create—think you can deliberately bring it into your experience—even though you have no proof. Then, as you remain committed to keeping that thought at the forefront of your mind, you create what you desire. But trust it is possible to create something where there was nothing previously.

9. Bruce Lipton

The ‘secret of life’ is belief. Rather than genes, it is our beliefs that control our lives.

Remember, consistently repeated thoughts become beliefs. Lipton’s research proves that beliefs and thoughts alter cells. Thus, he stressed that you must create beliefs related to your desires and focus on them. That’s how you create all aspects of your life, including health.

10. Dawson Church

Think deliberately. Use this remarkable gift of consciousness to direct your thoughts rather than being pushed around by reality.

In this final quotation, Church explains that when you employ the power of conscious and deliberate thinking, you take control of your reality. In fact, reality changes based on your thoughts.

The Creative Power of Thoughts

These quotes emphasize the creative power of our thoughts, beliefs, and imagination. These well-respected experts—speakers, authors, scientists, academics, and researchers— remind us that we are the creators of our reality. We each have the power to manifest whatever we desire by harnessing the power of thought.

How do you do this? First, consciously choose what thoughts to think. Then consistently and deliberately place your awareness or attention on those thoughts. Additionally, have faith that your thoughts can change your reality, manifest your desires, and create whatever you want to create in your life.
