Between 30 and 40 people died in Buffalo and Erie County as a result of the recent blizzard, according to news reports.
Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills football player who suffered cardiac arrest on the field, was resuscitated twice and is now awake and improving, though still in critical condition. This is attributed to the medical personnel and procedures always in place during National Football League games.
It’s highly unusual for an athlete to suffer cardiac arrest while playing a sport. Yet the event was handled professionally and well despite the low probability of the occurrence. Professionals practice and prepare for it.
It’s been snowing in Buffalo for thousands of years. (As it has in other cities.) How is it that we’re so woefully unprepared to deal with severe weather
which has a high probability of occurring? We continue to act as if we shocked at hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Is heavy snow in Buffalo so rare that it can’t be anticipated and prepared for better?
Maybe I’m the only one who sees the irony….
