In a tweet earlier today, metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis revealed that Playboy Enterprises International, Inc. has filed two new trademark applications for PLAYMATE and CENTERFOLD. The applications were submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 17, 2022, and signal plans by the publisher to offer:
• NFTs
• Digital collectibles and tokens
• Virtual blockchain-based tokens
"Clearly, Playboy sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademarks and brand for the virtual economy that will dominate it," Mr. Kondoudis opined.
Playboy's new trademark applications follow similar filings by Allure, Bon Appetit, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, Self, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, Wired, and Vanity Fair, among others.
"These filings continue a trend of NFT and Metaverse trademark applications by publications that started last year," Mr. Kondoudis noted.
"We expect the number of trademark filings for NFTs and virtual products and services from the publishing sector to increase over the next twelve months as publishers come to appreciate the need for brand protection in the Metaverse," Mr. Kondoudis said.
Michael Kondoudis is a Washington DC-based trademark lawyer who tracks Metaverse and NFT trademark filings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
