After months of speculation, NBCUniversal allows Peacock to strut its stuff, revealing new details about the streaming service. Peacock will be a free, premium, ad-supported streaming video on-demand service. It will feature subscription tiers and offer over 600 movies and 400 TV series. In addition, Peacock fans can access live and on-demand news, sports, late night and reality programming, including fan favorites like Law and Order, Kevin Hart, Jimmy Fallon and the Summer Olympics. Xfinity X1 and Flex customers will get early bird access to Peacock April 15. Peacock will be available nationally on July 15.

“This is a very exciting time for our company, as we chart the future of entertainment,” said Steve Burke, Chairman of NBCUniversal, in a January 16 announcement. “We have one of the most enviable collections of media brands and the strongest ad sales track record in the business. Capitalizing on these key strengths, we are taking a unique approach to streaming that brings value to customers, advertisers and shareholders.”

Peacock will offer viewers two tiers to choose from – a free tier and a premium tier.

Peacock Free will be a free, ad-supported streaming option with 7,500+ hours of programming. Viewers will get next-day access to new episodes of existing and new shows and anytime access to a library of TV shows, movies and curated programming, including exclusive channels like the SNL Vault and Family Movie Night. Peacock Free customers can purchase an ad-free experience for $9.99 a month.

Peacock Premium, which includes more than 15,000 hours of content, is an ad-supported tier available for free to 24 million Comcast and Cox cable subscribers. Those viewers will also get next-day access to new episodes of existing and new shows, early access to late night talk shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Myers and additional sports programming. Customers who want streaming access can pay an extra $4.99 a month to watch Peacock on their mobile and web devices. They can also purchase an ad-free version of Peacock Premium for $5.00 a month.

“Peacock will provide consumers with a destination that goes beyond movies and television, aggregating a variety of content that fans want on one service,” said Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock and NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises. “By delivering timely and topical content like breaking news, live sports, and watercooler moments from late night, Peacock is uniquely bringing a pulse to the world of streaming that does not exist in today’s marketplace.”

Peacock is anticipating making hundreds of millions of dollars in ad revenue from launch partners that include State Farm, Target and Unilever. With the Tokyo Olympics coming to NBC this summer, it is likely many other high-dollar sponsors will also sign onto the network. Peacock will feature live coverage of the Olympics as well as three daily shows, Tokyo Live, Tokyo Daily Digest featuring highlights and Tokyo Tonight.

In addition to popular classic series like Frasier, Parks and Recreation, The Office and Cheers, Peacock will offer original programming, including a multi-year deal with Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud Network, a Tina Fey-produced original series, Girls5Eva, drama series The Capture and Intelligence starring David Schwimmer of Friends fame. Peacock will also offer feature films, popular movie classics, kids programming and breaking news coverage.

Insider Take:

NBCUniversal’s Peacock has every reason to strut its stuff. There is a lot to love here. Having the advantage of seeing what has worked for its competitors, NBCUniversal has taken the time to craft a streaming service with something to appeal to just about every budget and type of viewer. Traditional cable customers (Comcast and Cox) can watch the ad-supported version for free or an ad-free version for $5. Cord cutters can watch the ad-supported streaming network for free or pay $9.99 for an ad-free version.

There is a wealth of well-known, popular content as well as enough original and exclusive programming to attract fans and keep them – which appeals to advertisers and sponsors. As long as Peacock’s launch and execution are flawless, and NBCUniversal delivers on its promises of content and pricing, we see Peacock being very successful, regardless of the competition.
