I had an amazing trip to Austin, Texas last week. What made it so wonderful?

1. I spoke about intuitive decision making at a fantastic conference (video coming soon!)

2. I gave two workshops at Facebook

3. My client yelled at me

Yup, you heard that right: One of the best parts of my trip was having one of my favorite clients put me in my place. 

What was she upset about? It will probably surprise you…

I was about to sabotage my self-care.

After a busy 10 days in the Texas capital, I was really tired. Before going out to dinner on my last night in town, I told this client my bedtime would be 9 p.m.

At 8 p.m., however, a good friend called and invited us out for ice cream.

“I’ll just make my bedtime 11 p.m.!” I exclaimed, feeling slightly sheepish about going back on my earlier declaration.

“No!” My client said. “You said bedtime was 9 p.m.”

I was surprised… and very grateful. As soon as we arrived home, I climbed into bed and fell fast asleep.

Sometimes, we are NOT the best proponents for our self care. What if we defended our healthy habits in the same, loving way we would care for our parents, our best friends, or the other important people in our lives? Would that change the game for you? It certainly would for me…

Remember: You are best prepared to enjoy your life and contribute to others when you are fully sourced (we’re talkin’ good sleep, good food, and plenty of exercise). If you want to show up as your best this week, I challenge you to try on this new paradigm: Care for yourself like you would care for your most cherished loved one.
