When was the last time you had a really good belly laugh? Not a forced chuckle. Not a timid ha, ha, ha.  I’m talking about a rip roaring, tears rolling down your cheek belly laugh?

It’s been so long ago for so many that it can be hard to remember.  This year has been so difficult there hasn’t much to laugh about.  But funny things do dot the landscape. After all, according to Dr. Seuss, “From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.” It’s important to recognize the humor around us, not keep it in. As Comedian Fred Allen once said, “It is bad to suppress laughter. It goes back down and spreads to your hips.”

And it can even help with your exercise goals. Norman Cousins says, “Laughter is a form of internal jogging. It moves your internal organs around. It enhances respiration. It is an igniter of great expectations.”

If things seem gloomy, and let’s not pretend for a good part of 2020 they were not, take a moment to remember what William Thackeray said, “A good laugh is sunshine in the house.” And we all need a little sunshine, right this very minute.

So if you find yourself cooking an “alternative” Thanksgiving this year, serving a Cornish hen rather than a turkey that barely fits in the oven, here’s a suggestion.

Think of something in your life that was funny, watch a comedy, or just take a moment to make yourself laugh. This song can get you going. Click here to hear my song Keep on Laughing.  It works for the kids on the cancer ward that I wrote it for who took a moment out to laugh. Remember,  “A good laugh is sunshine in the house.”
