I was walking along a wide hotel corridor on my way to the elevators at about 7 am. A door to the right and ahead of me opened and a hand appeared at the very bottom, patting the floor. I slowed,
Then an arm emerged, clearly feminine, which began a 180° sweep in front of the door. I began to move closer because I sensed someone in trouble. But then a bare shoulder appeared as the arm’s sweep widened. I then noticed the morning newspaper, about five feet away, clearly out of reach.
Do I simply move on? There is probably a naked woman who may well be about to emerge and I don’t want charges pressed against me for voyeurism or worse. But what if I just moved the newspaper closer, without making any noise? Wouldn’t that be helpful?
At that moment a head appeared, blonde, tousled hair, peering around the door and spotting the newspaper. I was frozen in place, reminded of a moray eel I had seen while snorkeling in the Caribbean, darting out of its home to capture prey and quickly returning. The woman looked up, saw me, and rapidly retreated into the room slamming the door.
I walked over, move the newspaper to the threshold, said loudly outside the door, “You can reach it now,” and went to breakfast.
