The Evolutionary Advantages of Mental Illness: Organization, Rumination, Peregrination, Isolation, Hibernation and…wait for it…Procreation
• What if those of us diagnosed as mentally ill are not living with a genetic mutation, but are in fact living with an amazing evolutionary adaptation?
• What if, mental illness is in fact, as Malcolm Gladwell writes in his book, David and Goliath, "a desirable disadvantage?"
• If that is the case, what if in addition to counseling and medication, to treat their disability, we showed people ways to embrace, utilize, and celebrate their extraordinary, ability? • What would the impact on a child be, if we reframed their mental illness as a combination of mental illness and mental able-ness? What would be the impact be on an adult, living with that label? I believe the positive impact would be incalculable. People would learn that they are not broken, they were made this way.

• So for me it comes down to the question; if this, then that, what is the connection? If this, my mental illness, gives me that, my mental able-ness, what is the connection? I believe the connection is the why, and I believe the why is found in evolution.
• We've barely scratched the surface figuring out why our brains go "wrong" the way they do, and some of the most interesting research suggests that what we now call a mental illness, and perhaps if treated, encouraged, and utilized properly, may in fact be reframed, as "a desirable disadvantage."
• That's my idea worth spreading.
