Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15, the time when millions of Americans pause to reevaluate their Medicare insurance coverage and options.

"This is a most important time of the year for seniors and should not be overlooked," declares Jesse Slome, director of the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance.  "This is a very busy time of the year for our members who help consumers evaluate and make choices about their Medicare insurance and Medicare drug benefits."

The Association offers the only national online directory of independent Medicare insurance professionals around the country.  "Thousands of consumers will access the directory during Open Enrollment to find specialists in their local area," Slome acknowledged.  "It's important however to act early because many agents get booked solid relatively early."

According to Slome Medicare enrollees will be paying slightly more for their coverage in 2019.  "The Trump administration announced the rise in costs just ahead of the signup period," Slome shared.  Medicare is divided according to the type of medical care provided, and individuals who enroll can choose traditional Medicare or can buy Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement insurance, which is run by private plans.

Beneficiaries pay premiums for Medicare Part B, which covers care from doctors, hospitals, medical supplies, and certain home health services.   According to AAMSI, the new standard cost for 2019 will be $135.50 a month, a slight increase from $134 a month, the 2018 rate.
